Museo Alfredo Binda - Alfredo Binda Museum

Alfredo Binda Museum

In 1986 The Administration of the Municipality of Cittiglio created the museum dedicated to Alfredo Binda, the illustrious citizen who, with his cycling challenges/achievements, honored his native town and whole of Italy. The material that the family made available was catalogued and rearranged into a documentary exhibition that was housed in the primary school building and that was visited by thousands of visitors over the years. On May 1995, when Cittiglio was included in the “Giro d’Italia”, the municipal Administration decided to move the museum to Vararo, close to the Cuvignone Pass, one of the usual destinations of the cyclists. The museum is currently in Cittiglio on the 1
st floor of the main building of the Ferrovie Nord Train Station, in front of the square that was entitled to the champion.

The museum hosts in one big room different memory items and documents that help you to revive the life and the great achievements of Alfredo Binda:

World and Italian championship jerseys, saddles, shoes and googles, precious tools for the dusty roads in the races of the 1920s and 1930s.

The finest pieces of the collection, that was furtherly enriched on the 10th anniversary of the death of great Champion by new donations, are the two Legano bicycle, which helped him to win the world championships in 1930 and 1932.

Among the items you can also find the cornet that Binda played in the band of Cittiglio.

On the walls there are several issues of the Gazzetta dello Sport, that describes his successes and glorious moments.

Diplomas and recognitions show the fame he achieved abroad after he won three World Championships and five Tours of Italy.

The collection was completed with big tables that show in a chronological order the several pictures with the glorious moments of the sport career and the life of a man. From the peculiar pictures of the “Six Days” at Madison Square Garden of New York to the images that show the conditions in which the races were run. It’s a documentation of an era, and not only from the point of view of the sport.

The exhibition also includes the memories related to his 20-year-long career as coach of the National team of cyclists.

The Museum

The museum achieved a great level of popularity, as proved by the two thausand visitors that sign the record books every year.
The Binda Museum is part of the “Club Italia Musei del Ciclismo”, with which it collaborates to promote the knowledge about the history and the culture of the extremely popular sport on bike.  Every year the Museum organizes races for young people and bike lovers.
This connection with the Club Italia Musei del Ciclismo allows to promote the name and the image of the museum out of the Province as well (through participations into events, conferences, and funny initiatives such as entitling a street in Cesiomaggiore (BL) to Binda)
This exhibition was often brought out of the Museum in the last years and helped to enrich other settings such as at the Fairs in Laveno and Varese, Malpensa 2000, during the event on the day before the start of the Tour of Lombardy, at the exhibition called “The Ways of the Insubrian Civilizations” in Varese, or the exhibition by FAI at Villa Panza. Alfredo Binda’s memories are also made available to enrich the settings of the awarding ceremonies and the meeting of the cycle sport of the Province (for example during the Oscar ceremony of the cycle sport within the Province).
Since the museum is looking at the future, it wants to promote the memory through sport and cultural events that can reach young people. So far they have organized meetings for the students of the primary and middle schools, a painting exhibition, book presentations, involving sport people from the present and the past.
